Import tariff

The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duties on imports of palm oil flakes for use in the manufacture of food products. These flakes are classified as palm oil and its fractions, refined but not chemically modified, under tariff item No. 1511.90.90 of the Customs Tariff, dutiable at 11% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff, and with a 10% rate under the General Preferential Tariff (GPT).
The department notes that the applicant claims that these flakes are not available from Canadian production and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in both the domestic and export markets.
The department asked that views on this topic be expressed by March 16, 2012 to:
