Export licensing requirement

On 17 August 2010, the government of India announced the removal of the licensing scheme for cotton exports in place since May of the same year. Instead, exporters of cotton, cotton waste, and cotton yarn shall register their export contracts with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

The new regulation makes no reference as to any discretion DGFT may have in the acceptance of export contracts.

In the initial regulation required registrations with the Textile Commissioner. This responsibility was transfered to the DGFT by notification 12/2010 on 16 December 2010.

The liberalization came into force on 1 November 2010.
