Safeguard

On 29 July 2016, the South African authorities announced the initiation of a safeguard investigation on imports of flat hot-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel. The products subject to investigation are classified under the following HS code: 7209.15; 7209.16; 7209.17; 7209.18; 7225.50; 7226.92. The request for investigation was lodged by the South African Iron and Steel Institute on behalf of ArcelorMittal South Africa.
On 10 October 2016, the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa concluded the preliminary determination. The Commission decided to continue the investigation without the imposition of provisional duties.

On 29 September 2017, the South African authorities terminated the above investigation without the imposition of duties. The investigation was terminated as "the domestic industry was not experiencing a price disadvantage when comparing its unsuppressed selling price with the landed price of the import".
