Import tariff quota

On 22 July 2015, the Brazilian Foreign Trade Council Camex issued Resolution No. 68 introducing a temporary tariff-rate quota on aluminium (not alloyed) in the form of standard ingots, sow or T-bar. The product falls under the Mercosur Common Nomenclature (NCM): 7601.10.00, example 001. The import duty is reduced from 6% to 0% with a quota of 650,000 tonne. The measure is in force from 18 August 2015 to 17 August 2016.

Camex already introduced a tariff-rate quota on the subject good in 2014 (measure No. 8495) but with a lower permitted import volume.

On 18 February 2016, the Brazilian Foreign Trade Council Camex issued Resolution No. 15 altering the above Resolution, see related measure No. 12015.

List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff
The good was included in the List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff (LETEC) of Mercosur which is a mechanism that allows member states of Mercosur to apply customs duties that are lower or higher than otherwise listed in the Mercosur Common External Tariff schedule. However, the tariffs shall not surpass the ceilings given by the WTO. Decision CMC no. 58/10 gives Brazil the right to maintain a list of 100 such tariff codes based on the Mercosur Common Nomencalture (NCM) until 31 December 2015.
