Technical barrier to trade
On 10 June 2016, the Indian Ministry of Steel published theStainless Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2016. The Order prohibits the manufacture, storage for sale, distribution or sale of several stainless steel products that do not conform to specified standards and carry the standard mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
Although the Order applies to both domestic and imported stainless steel products, the Order has been motivated as a barrier to foreign steel producers which do not generally meet BIS norms.
The Order will be applicable after 3 months from the date of publishing the Order. Exports to countries which do not require BIS standards are exempted from this measure.
On 9 September 2016, through an Amendment Order the date of applicabiliy of the measure was deferred to 10 December 2016. On 6 December 2016, the applicability of the measure was further deferred by 2 months.
