Effective 22 May 2014, Sri Lanka reduced the Special Commodity Levy on potato imports from Rs. 25 per kg. to Rs. 15 per kg. and on sugar imports from Rs. 30 per kg. to Rs. 25 per kg. Although initially announced for 7 months, the levy on potato was reduced to Rs. 5 per kg and on sugar increased to Rs. 28 per kg. in July 2014 (see related measure).
Also in the same notification, the existing SCL rates were extended for 7 months for imports of fresh or chilled fish, Maldive fish, dried sprats, dried fish,yogurt,butter,garlic,peas,chickpeas,greengram(moong),blackgram,cowpea, fresh oranges, grapes, apples, chillies, seeds of coriander, seeds of cumin, seedsoffennel,turmeric,matheseeds,kurakkan,kurakkanflour,blackgram flour,groundnut-shelled,mustardseeds,vegetableoils,margarine,cannedfish and salt.
The Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product while the levy is valid.
