On 08 October 2015, the government of Mexico applied a six-month lasting tariff of 15% on 97 import tariffs falling under the following steel product categories: slab, cold rolled coil (CRC), hot rolled coil (HRC), heavy plate and wire rod. The prior is applicable to countries with which Mexico does not have Trade Agreements.
On 5 April 2016, the government of Mexico decided to extend this import duty for additional other six months.
Effective from 08 October 2016, the government of Mexico decided to further extend the denoted import duty for additional six months.
On April 6, 2017, a new prolongation was passed by the Mexican Government, extending for another 180 days the 15% import tariff.
