Import-related non-tariff measure, nes
On 29 December 2015, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade announced regulation 125/M-DAG/PER/2015 relaxing the import restrictions on salt.
With the new provisions in place, the reference price and time restrictions for the importation of salt (during harvest time) have been scrapped. Furthermore, the restriction requiring all national production to be used before allowing imports has also been erased.
The liberalisation has faced criticism from local politicians, particularly from the Deputy Governor of East Java who has said in the media that the province's salt mines are already facing problems with quality and yield (cf. Sources).
The regulation comes into force on 1 April 2016.
