ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 6 May 2015, Sri Lanka replaced the Special Commodity Levy on rice imports with an import duty. The levy of Rs. 40 per kg. was replaced with a customs duty of Rs. 35 per kg.
However, the Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product while the levy is valid. This means with the non-applicability of the levy, a Value Added Tax of 11%, Ports and Airport Development Levy of 5%, and Nation Building Tax of 2% will also be levied on rice imports.
The import duty was increased to Rs. 50 per kg. on 1 February 2016 (see related State Act).
