On 3 November 2015, Bangladesh announced an export ban on raw jute. According to an official's statement reported in the media, the ban was instituted to increase supply of jute to local bag and sack makers.
Although the ban was initially meant to be temporary, lasting for a month until 2 December 2015, it was later extended indefinitely.
On 15 December 2016, the export ban was lifted on certain processed varieties of jute (see related measure).
On 28 March 2016, Bangladesh lifted the export ban and the said notification issued by the Ministry of Textiles and Jute will come into effect from 3 April 2016.
