ANNOUNCED AS TEMPORARYNo
On 28 May 2010, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued Notice no. 441 exempting the import tariff on plug inserts and sockets.
The duty reduction was requested by Apex Power Cord Set Technologies to the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC). The ITAC in turn recommended a tariff exemption, as international type plug inserts and sockets are not produced in the SACU.
The government did not change the tariff schedule, but introduced a rebate facility of full duty classified under 316.11/8536.69 /01.06 with the following description:
The regular tariff schedule for sockets and plug inserts varies between 15% and 5%, except for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) which is exempted from the duty.
Affected trading partners
The GTA retrieves its data on affected trading partners from UN Comtrade. However, for the year 2009, the database was not able to provide the affected trading partners for Botswana, Swaziland, and Lesotho.
