Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced on March 18, 2015 a new export market development program to provide $50 million over five years in direct financial assistance to entrepreneurs seeking to export to emerging markets for the first time. Non-repayable contributions, with cost-matching by recipients, will finance activities such as participation in trade fairs and missions, and market research. This program is expected to assist between 500 to 1,000 exporters per year across the country. The proposal is under consideration in Parliament as part of the government's budget proposal. That proposal also calls for the following actions:
