On 22 March 2010, Germany announced it would provide development funds for the new Airbus A350 amounting for EUR 1.1 billion. The funds are provided in the form of a loan on preferential conditions. The A350 is meant to compete with the Boeing Dreamliner 787. Boeing is the only main competitor on the market for large passanger aircrafts.

The first tranche of the German loan has been provided in late 2010. The second tranche has been delayed due to disagreements between Airbus and Germany, finally in February 2014, Airbus decided not to seek for the second tranche. Therefore the overall support is lowered by EUR 600 million.
Over the years Airbus' rival Boeing has complained, that over the past twodecades, Airbus received EUR 150 billion of loans and other benefitsfrom its stakeholders: Germany, France, Spain and the UK. (source DW23.3.2010)
