On 30 May 2013, the Australian Government has introduced a bill to amend the Australian Citizenship Act. The purpose of the amendment is to broaden the class of foreign nationals eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship already after 180 days of residence in Australia (in the two years before application). The normal residence requirement for citizenship is 4 years.
Shortened requirements are currently only available to individuals competing in the Australian team in the Olympic Games or Davis or Federal Cup competitions, and individuals who regularly travel outside Australia for working activity (such as crewmen). The bill extends the shortened requirements to senior executives, highly specialized scientists and other specialists.
The bill has been approved by both Chambers on 21 June 2013 and was registered as Act 57, 2013 on 25 June 2013.
