On 27 June 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced the suspension of the Federal Entrepreneur Program. Starting from 1 July 2011, the CIC no longer accepts new applications under the program mentioned above.
The Program granted permanent resident status to foreigner who: i) had a minimum level of business experience, ii) produced a certain net worth, and iii) promised to create at least one job every 3 years in Canada. With the suspension of the program, foreign entrepreneurs are no longer granted preferential treatment for obtaining a residence permit.
The suspension remains in force until otherwise indicated in future ministerial instructions.
Changes to the following programs are also implemented:
- Federal Immigrant Investor Program (IIP): introduction of a cap of 700 applicants per year;
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): introduction of a cap of 10000 applicants per year, with a maximum of 500 new applicants per occupation.
