Controls on commercial transactions and investment instruments

On 8 July 2022, the government of Canada announced sanctions against 13 Russian state-controlled media companies in response to the invasion of Ukraine. According to the government, the sanctioned entities are involved in disinformation and propaganda.

The new restrictions impose a dealings prohibition as well as an asset freeze on the target companies. Among the affected enterprises are:

2. Channel One Russia JSC

3. Television Station Russia-1

4. NTV Broadcasting Company JSC

5. TASS

6. The All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK)

7. Gazprom Media

8. National Media Group

9. Rossiya-24 TV Channel

10. Smotrim

11. Vesti.Ru

12. RT

13. Sputnik

In the same announcement, the Canadian government also banned the import of certain gold products from Russia (see related intervention).

In this context, Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: "The Russian propaganda machine must answer for its lies. Canada is committed to fighting disinformation wherever and whenever it is found. Today, we make it clear to those who peddle deception: you will be held accountable. Canada stands with Ukraine". 

The measure is part of the sanctions introduced by Canada against Russia and Belarus in response to the Ukraine invasion (see related state acts).
