NoOn 8 July 2022, the government of Canada issued Regulations Amending the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations (SOR/2022-171), prohibiting the importation of certain gold products from Russia. The measure is taken in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
The government thereby prohibits the importation of unwrought gold, semi-manufactured gold, gold powder, monetary gold and jewellery made of gold from Russia. The goods in question fall under the following HS tariff lines: 7108.11, 7108.12, 7108.13, 7108.20, 7113.19, and 7114.19. The import ban does not apply to the goods in transit through Russia and to the personal effects for individual use.
In the same announcement, the government of Canada imposed sanctions on Russian media companies allegedly involved in disinformation activities (see related intervention).
In this context, Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, said: "Canada is unwavering in the belief that Ukrainians deserve to live in peace. Vladimir Putin and his regime have caused untold pain and suffering in Ukraine and across the world. Together, with our G7 counterparts, Canada is stepping up our continuous and coordinated pressure to bring about the end of Vladimir Putin’s war of choice".
The measure comes in coordination with the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan (see related state acts). It is part of the sanctions introduced by Canada against Russia and Belarus in response to the Ukraine invasion (see related state acts).
