Lamy calls on G20 to begin to draw up exit strategies
The head of the World Trade Organization on Saturday called for Group of 20 leaders to make a renewed push to break the "impasse" in the Doha round of trade talks...
...Lamy praised the G-20 for resisting protectionist measures during the financial crisis. While noting "some slippage," he said recent restrictions have only affected 1% of global trade flows.
However, the rosy view was disputed earlier this week by an independent analysis by a consortium of research institutions.
The Global Trade Alert, set up to track the G-20's commitment to resisting protectionism, estimated that discriminatory measures hurting trade are on the rise and affecting over 10% of global flows. Unlike the WTO, the report counts measures beyond trade barriers, such as subsidies and impediments to investment.
