Venezuela: Import licences for passenger vehicles
Description
Early in 2009, the Venezuelan government announced that it would reduce the number of imported vehicles to 30'000, down from 130'000 the previous year. Since then, the responsible ministry has award import licences to selected trading partners. No official import licence target has sofar been announced for 2010.
On 15 July 2009, the government issued licences for 10'000 vehicles imported from Ecuadorian plants of KIA and General Motors.
On 11 August 2009, the government announced imports of 10'000 vehicles from Argentina. This quota had initially been assigned to imports from Colombia but was withdrawn in protest against the Colombian-US agreement for further cooperation against narcotic trafficking.
On 6 April 2010, it was officially announced that 5'000 vehicles would be imported from Russian plants of Autovaz. According to a press report, the government has also agreed to import a furhter 14'000 vehicles from Ecuador.
On 7 April 2010, the ministry published plans to import 5'000 vehicles from Uruguay.
