United Republic of Tanzania: Mandatory listing of mobile phone companies
Description
The parliament of Tanzania has passed the Electronic and Postal Communications Bill 2009, making it mandatory for all mobile phone companies in the country to list on the Dar es Salaam stock exchange in the next three years. Also, these companies would not be allowed to sell or trade stocks without prior government approval.
On the face of it, this measure does not discriminate between domestic and foreign mobile phone companies. However, further research has revealed that all but one of the affected companies are subsidiaries of foreign telecoms companies (headquartered in Dubai, Kuwait, Luxembourg, and South Africa).
