Nigeria: Buy Made-In-Nigeria campaign

Measure #1318 | Published 1 May 2010 ▲

Description

According to numerous and consistent press reports, the government of Nigeria has launched a "Buy Made-In-Nigeria" campaign on 13 October 2009. With a campaign funding of N200 million, the government seeks to encourage Nigerians to consume locally produced goods.

To set an example, the then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has directed that catering for all future official functions shall be provided only through domestic produce. Also, Nigerian aid to foreign countries should be in the form of products made in Nigeria. Finally, the uniforms and boots of the Nigerian Armed Forces shall be sourced locally.

In spring 2010, press reports emerged indicating a broader Buy Made-In-Nigeria stance on public procurement. In a press report on 10 March 2010, the Nigerian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Achike Udenwa, is quoted: "We are sponsoring a memo soon before the Federal Executive Council to make it mandatory for all procurement in the federal establishment locally based."
