Canada: Proposed levy on blank audio recording media
Description
The Canadian Private Copying Collective has issued a proposal to collect levies on removable media storage. As posted to the Canada Gazette of May 14, 2011, the proposed levy would be in the amount of 29¢ for each CD-R, CD-RW, CD-R Audio or CD-RW Audio; 50¢ for each electronic memory card with 1 gigabyte of memory or less, $1.00 for each electronic memory card with more than one gigabyte of memory but less than 8 gigabytes of memory, and $3.00 for each electronic memory card with 8 gigabytes of memory or more. The levy would apply to all such media imported into or manufactured in Canada, except for those destined for export.
The Copyright Board has asked that any person who wishes to object to the statement may file written objections with the Board within 60 days of publication (i.e.,no later than July 13, 2011).
