Argentina: media denounces de facto prohibition on bovine meat exports

Measure #1172 | Published 17 Feb 2010 ▲

Description

Argentinean local media reported a de facto prohibition on bovine meat exports. There is no record of any formal act of the Government embodying the measure. Instead, the ban is allegedly being implemented through the total suspension of export permits or “Export Transactions Registers” (“ETRs”). Under Resolution 8590/08, ETRs are a mandatory requisite to clear any meat export.

According to media reports, the measure would be aimed at tackling the steady increase of bovine meat prices in the domestic market.

While the Ministry of Agriculture denied the existence of the prohibition, there were contradictory statements by other high-rank officials.
