Argentina announces restrictions on foodstuff imports
Description
On May 5 2010, the Government of Argentina announced the application of restrictions on imported food products. According to the Secretary of Interior Trade, imports of premium foodstuff that have an equivalent in national production will be thwarted.
So far, no written announcement or regulation has been issued. The measure will be enforced by verbal arrangements with main supermarket chains. Moreover, the Government suggested that, whenever necessary, issuing of “free circulation certificates” granted by the Anmat (“National Agency of Pharmaceutical Products, Foodstuff and Medical Technology) will be hold up.
The measure will enter into effect on June 1st and will be mainly targeted at premium items, such as Swiss chocolate, Spanish ham and olive oil, Italian pasta and German beer.
