Author: Marc Auboin
Event: Halting the spread of protectionism
Description:
Marc Auboin spoke on the topic of 'The drying-up of trade finance in periods of financial crises'. He looked at the cause of the decline in trade finance during the current and previous episodes of financial crises, its potential impact on world trade, and current collective efforts to boost, through short- and medium-term measures, the supply of trade finance at affordable rates. Collective efforts are currently underway under the sponsorship of the WTO and IFIs - encompassing measures by country governments, multilateral institutions and regional development banks, and the private sector - to prevent a drying up of trade finance that might accelerate the slowing down of international trade and output.
